This is what I’ve been listening to a whole lot lately. Rap music is usually really distracting while I’m studying, but this has been surprisingly helpful getting me through the mass of essays and homework assignments I’ve had lately. Who knew?

It’s been a while since I’ve zoomed through a book as fast as I read Democracy by Joan Didion. It was difficult to muddle through at first, but once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down. It’s novel about many things: love, politics and family drama, but what I love most about it is how it is told from the perspective of Didion herself, who is not a character, but rather an outsider looking in. It was a novel with many different stories occurring at once; but strangely I didn’t finish it feeling unsatisfied. I think we got just enough of a taste of every part it that we could understand the whole story and the character’s relationships to each other. I also liked how it was written, almost like a really long feature story in a magazine, but still with literary style. This is first of Joan Didion’s books that I’ve read, but I’m excited to read more! I would definitely recommend for book lovers out there!
I just finished watching Pariah for the second time in less than 24 hours. Rather than making a long post about why I thought it was so great, because by now I’m sure everyone has seen it, here is a short list of things I really liked about the movie.
1. Alike’s laugh
2. The soundtrack
3. Alike and Sharonda’s relationship
4. Laura
5. The poetry
6. Bina’s room. And her clothes actually, even though she was (predictably) a jerk.
7. The ending. So cliche! But so amazing.
