Looking for Alaska
In between reading textbooks, The Myth of Choice and The Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man (I know, how can I possibly be reading all these books at once :/), I bought Looking for Alaska, by John Greene and I loved it. No matter how old I get, I never stop loving books meant for teenagers. But this one was a little bit different from my usuals in that it was told from the perspective of a...

Thinking of Summer
The weather has been unbelievably cold these past few weeks, so when I saw these pretty pastel Doc Martens I immediately got excited for summer!

Sweet.
Ever since my first cupcake from Cupcake Collection in Nashville, I have fallen completely in love with the little treats. So I was beyond excited when I found this cute cupcake place in London! My friend Aja and I stopped in today to try it out and I was pleased. They are delicious!   Can’t wait to try some cool new food places here!

Small Differences
I’ve only been in London 6 days, and already I’ve noticed SO much. One thing in particular has really struck me, and that’s the attitude towards people of color. Or maybe what I perceive to be the attitude towards people of color. It’s a hard feeling to describe, but sometimes (not all the time), in America it’s awkward and uncomfortable to be the only person of color...

15 Simple Pleasures
I was inspired to do this by a friend, who recently did it on her blog (http://thequeensthrone.tumblr.com/ - check it out!). So here are 15 things that make me happy. 1. Reading 2. Reading outside 3. Getting inspiration from magazines (recipes, decorating ideas, life decisions….) 4. Being with my family 5. Travel 6. That creepy but extremely peaceful quiet right before a thunderstorm ...

Holiday Treat
The peppermint hot chocolate is my favorite holiday drink from Starbucks, so I decided to make some of my own for Christmas Eve. It was extremely chocolaty and fattening, but delicious! I actually took stuff from several recipes, but I mostly used this one (cut in half), plus 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract (I also used almond milk instead of regular) Merry Christmas everyone!

New Soul Mac & Cheese
I am determined to learn how to cook for real. So when I saw these recipes for “new” soul food in Essence I knew I had to try one. “New” meaning healthy soul food that still tastes the same. I decided to attempt one of my soul food faves, mac & cheese, using the recipe from Essence. Considering it was my first attempt, it turned out surprisingly well! But this reduced...

Holiday Book List: 2011
I always make my book lists really long and I never have time to read all of the books on it. But I think these six are definitely doable. I love being able to read for pleasure without having to worry about a million other things going on. This is going to be a wonderful holiday :) 1. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo: My friend Courtney recommended this, and it’s first on the last because...

21 Things I've Learned
thequeensthrone: (In no particular order.  Also, even though I’ve learned these things doesn’t necessarily mean that I apply the knowledge all the time.) Love alone is not enough to make a relationship work.   People are going to do what they want to do.  You can tell them how you feel, you can nag, you can even try and persuade.  If they want to consider your exhortations, they will.  If they...

U Street Cafe
I love studying off campus. It’s so nice to get out of my room, or the library, and find somewhere cute to focus. I usually stick with Panera, but my friend introduced me to U Street Cafe, which is perfect. It’s close, has free WiFi, good food, and multiple outlets. Plus, during the day it’s not crowded at all! I wish I could have enjoyed this place more, but I’ll find...

Racks on Racks on Racks.....of Books!
Today I visited Kramersbooks for the first time which is apparently, a DC staple which I of course, knew nothing about. It’s not very big, but is still HEAVEN for book lovers. There are tons of new selections and popular books that everyone has heard about, but there is a focus on political/economic/philosophy books that makes it stand from a mainstream bookstore. I didn’t get to stay...

Operation Explore England
View London in a full screen map I’m starting to get really excited/nervous about studying in London next semester. But mostly excited. There is sooo much to do and see in all of Europe I don’t know how will be able to do it all! But I made this map of places I definitely would like to see while I’m there. You can click on the individual colored tabs to see what exactly they...

Moroccan Chicken + Yellow Rice
Several months ago I experienced a random desire to cook like crazy, and bought (for $3) the O Magazine cookbook. I was so excited about it, I even bookmarked all of the recipes I wanted to try. Well, needless to say, the cookbook has been sitting idle on my desk for the past few months. But today, I finally cracked it open and tried an adapted version of one of my bookmarked recipes, Moroccan...

The Lacuna
I can’t say it enough: I love Barbara Kingsolver. Her novels are the kind that draw you all the way into the story, so much so that you feel you are one of the characters. They make you think for hours and hours after you are done reading. But one of the things I love the most is her ability to intertwine fiction and history; her novels are some of the most creative stories I’ve ever...
